We all need a little support from time to time... reach for those props and find an easeful release into postures rather than strain.
I am a big fan of the simplicity of just you and your mat. It makes practicing much easier to do and there for more accessible in - simply hop on your mat to move, breath and relax in a mindful way. But when we find that modern life has contributed to restricted ranges of motion in hips and shoulders and we’ve developed less efficient movement patterns and habits, it can be hugely helpful to have support to release these. This is where props come in.
I talk a lot, in workshops and classes, about how to use props well as this time gives us a good chance to explore for ourselves how they work or don’t work for our individual bodies. I also like to guide students how to lightly use blocks in standing postures
Basic props to have:
Block
Belt
Eye pillow
Blanket
Cushion
A bolster is a versatile investment but not essential. You will likely enjoy using for ‘sitting’ once you have established a regular meditation practice. They take up space and they cost more, but they also provide some beautiful support for the knees and lower back in your Savasana (final rest).
Some of the props can always be adapted from things you already have i.e. a belt can be a dressing gown cord and you can make an eye pillow using flax seed and lavender. However, if your bringing to class you may like have specific props for this you can find a really good range at Yoga Matters.
